About the Book

Illuminating the Alzheimer's Path

Living in the Light While Walking in the Darkness of Dementia

The book she wished she’d had

Donna Brown Benton penned the book she wished she had access to when she was thrust unprepared onto the Alzheimer’s path.

In Illuminating the Alzheimer’s Path, through a collection of forty-two stories, Donna shares her lived experience of journeying with and caring for her husband, Doug, for sixteen years. The author is hopeful that others facing the path she and her husband traveled will find wisdom, support, and solace in its pages.

The book’s subtitle, “Living in the Light While Walking in the Darkness of Dementia,” signals the author’s intention to speak both about the hard realities of dementia and the moments of meaning, connection, and light that persist.

Both the carefully-crafted subtitle and the book’s content demonstrate that light and dark co-exist. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness does not overcome it.

Spirit collages

Spirit collages are featured throughout the book. Donna created a series of collages to visually express and elevate the written word of each accompanying story. The artistic visuals for each of the book’s forty-two stories call for reflection and resonate on a deep emotional level.

The Book’s Target Audience

All adults

There is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s. With our aging population, the number of dementia diagnoses continues to rise. The forecasted prediction is that the number of people living with Alzheimer’s will double by 2040. Thus, all of us can expect to be affected — as the person living with Alzheimer’s, their primary caregiver, or a member of their personal or professional community.
